Timbers fall 1

PORTLAND, Ore. – Trailing 1-0 after the first half, the Portland Timbers pushed for an equalizer, outshooting C.F. Monterey 11-5 in the second half, but were unable to level the match, falling 1-0 to C.F. Monterrey in the 2023 Leagues Cup Round of 32 at Providence Park on Friday night. Portland returns to MLS regular season play on the road against Houston Dynamo FC on Aug. 20.

Portland’s Leagues Cup 2023 CampaignIn their first Leagues Cup appearance, the Timbers were one of eight MLS Western Conference teams to advance to the Round of 32. Portland finished second in West Group 1, earning a 2-0 win over the San Jose Earthquakes, before falling 2-1 in its second group match against Tigres UANL. Evander scored goals in both matches for the Timbers. Felipe Mora added a goal in Portland’s win over the Earthquakes.

Looking AheadThe Timbers return to league play on Sunday, Aug. 20, sitting just three points out of playoff position with 11 matches remaining on the schedule. Portland will play six of those games at Providence Park, where the team is 5-3-3 in 2023. The Timbers have collected seven points in their last four home matches in the regular season. Individually, Franck Boli leads the team with six goals in his 18 appearances this season, while Evander has five goals and Dairon Asprilla has tallied four goals for Portland. Boli has two goals and an assist in Portland’s last four regular season matches at home.

Goal-Scoring PlaysMTY – Maximiliano Meza (Luis Romo), 45+1 minute: Luis Romo dribbled to the left corner of the box and switched the point of the attack to find Maximiliano Meza near to the top of the box on the right side. Meza received the pass and sent a curling strike inside the right post.
